Compared to ball screws, lead screws are less susceptible to dirt. However, the accumulation of dirt on the screw should of course be avoided. If dirt works its way into the nut, wear usually increases. In combination with lubrication, this can lead to the dirt particles combining with the lubricant and creating an “abrasive paste”.
Ideally, the spindle should be completely protected with a bellows or another design measure.
For applications where this is not possible for reasons of space or cost, the use of a wiper for trapezoidal threaded spindles is a conceivable alternative.
